I have a 2014 platinum and the tailgate assist (oem) has failed. The ball that holds the hydraulic assist in place on the tailgate is loose. I'm assuming the nutsert has become loose. I bought a replacement from amazon but have no idea how to get the ball out of the nutsert because it's loose. (See pic) I tried taking the plastic tailgate cover off but it's all metal underneath with no access points to the other side that I can see. I know you're supposed to install only on drivers side but what happens if you install on passenger side as it seems the same and would maybe be easier. I just dont want to take to the dealer and pay a big bill. Help?!
There is no such thing as an OEM tailgate assist on a 2014.
You need to tape a wrench on a stick and stick it in the panel to get to the nut. You could return what you bought after doing this fix, or possibly get DeeZee to replace any parts necessary.
Same happened to mine. I pulled the nutzert out, and used an extension magnet to put a nut and washer on the backside. Had to remove the panel on the tailgate, and then use a lung handle wrench to hold the nut once it was started.
