Thumbs up SYNC (possibly) Fixed by TSB 11-10-22

I’ve been having problems with SYNC for over a month now in my 2011 F-150 XLT Screw. I do not have the navigation system or upgraded Sony stereo – just the single-CD and Sirius. I am on SYNC Gen1, V3.2.2. I also have a 350GB Toshiba HDD that has a lot of music on it, in the glove box, hooked up to the second USB port.

So the problem was that I would start the truck up, and SYNC would occasionally freeze, lock up completely, and leaving me with the radios only. I would hit Aux and it would bounce right back to radio as if SYNC wasn’t even installed. My phone wouldn’t automatically connect to Bluetooth as it does when everything is work correctly. I would have to shut the truck off, remove the key, open and close the door, wait, and restart to get everything back. Sometimes I’d have to do this several times to get SYNC back again. AND… the most annoying part is that after one of these failures, SYNC wouldn’t recognize most of the music on the HDD. I’d have to take the HDD into the house, and delete/re-copy files or otherwise change the contents to get SYNC to re-index the drive, which would take upwards of 20 minutes. SYNC exhibited this behavior regardless of whether I had the HDD hooked up to USB 1, USB 2, or not connected at all. I tried restoring the factory defaults, a master reset, and pulling the fuse - nothing fixed this irritating behavior.

Then I was poking around the Motorcraft Service Publications and found out about TSB 11-10-22. This TSB is meant to fix the exact problem I was having! So today the dealer reprogrammed the ACM as called for by the TSB and so far, SYNC works better than before. The reprogramming wiped out my phonebook, but all the other settings are intact. SYNC had to recognize my HDD as a new device, but it then indexed all 18,000+ files in less than 30 seconds. And now SYNC seems to be behaving exactly like it’s supposed to. Time will tell for sure, but so far today, the truck has be started at least 10 times, remotely twice (just to see what happens), and it seems like the quirks are gone. Seems like SYNC is now working by the book. I wonder if it will last....

Here’s the text of the TSB:

TSB 11-10-22 SYNC LOCKUP DURING VEHICLE CRANKING / STARTING - SINGLE CD OR SIX DISC CD - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 7/29/2011
Publication Date: October 20, 2011
FORD: 2011 F-150

The article supersedes TSB 11-9-7 to update the Action statement.

ISSUE:
Some 2011 F-150 vehicles equipped with SYNC and either a single disc or six disc cd player audio control unit and built on or before 7/29/2011 may exhibit a lockup condition of the accessory protocol interface module (APIM) when the vehicle is started. This concern may be more evident with a USB device connected and/or with the door open.

ACTION:
Reprogram the audio control module (ACM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 75.04 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2011.9 DVD.DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com.

NOTE: NAVIGATION EQUIPPED VEHICLES ARE NOT AFFECTED BY THIS CONCERN. PROCEED WITH NORMAL WSM DIAGNOSIS FOR NAVIGATION EQUIPPED UNITS.

WARRANTY STATUS:
Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage
IMPORTANT: Warranty coverage limits/policies are not altered by a TSB. Warranty coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part.

OPERATION DESCRIPTION TIME
111022A 2011 F-150: Reprogram The ACM (Do Not Use With Any Other Labor Operations) 0.4 Hr.

DEALER CODING
BASIC PART NO. CONDITION CODE

There is a second USB port under the center of the dash. Search this forum for "USB2" and you'll find a step-by-step on how to get to it. It is accessed by voice commands only: say "USB two"

Thanks for this great news! I have been having the same issue with my 2011 XLT! I am bringing my truck in tomorrow for a tire rotation/oil change and I will have them update my Sync. I'll let you all know if it fixes my system as well.

Have this same problem. Oddly it seems to happen only in the morning after the vehicle sits overnight.

If I'm patient sync will start working a minute or two after I start my morning drive without do the procedure you do.

The most annoying problem is when I download audio books from the public library on my USB stick, this issue will occur and sync will forget my place.

Why can't they provide this update on the sync site so that we can do it ourselves?

This is not a sync update but an ACM update.

Your description matches my problem exactly. Thanks for saving me the trouble of researching it, finding root cause, and writing it up.
