Some members did the retro-fit with the doodle bug mic and some microphones were bad from the get-go with the retro-fit.

mine is located on the mirror, I took the truck in for the recall and then paid $20 for the mic that is color coated to match interior and just wired it in to the relocated mic. Now it looks factory and no complaints.

Those tiny squares in the bottom of my rearview mirror are NOT microphones like I thought initially as well, trust me I tested them. 🐻 in mind I'm driving a 2011 Ford escape. Those are the dimming sensors for nighttime glare. Put your fingers over them while driving at night and watch your mirror magically become useable again. I did however find the microphone!!! Look at the top of the mirror! It's actually quite sizeable!
