Was your truck lifted? If it was, did the warranty cover the steering rack? tnx

Default Steering wheel popping over bumps/rough terrain

Add me to the club as well. I have a 2011 FX4 with just under 20k miles on it, and it has been experiencing the popping noise and vibration felt though the steering wheel most noticeably when driving over bumps and rough terrain when the no force is being applied to the steering wheel in a left or right direction.

When this started about 6 months ago it could only be felt after driving for about 20 to 30 min with outdoor temps above 85F. As time has gone on, it has progressed to the point now where even when it's 30F outside it will act up after the vehicle is warmed up.

I've been able to replicate the noise I hear and vibration I feel in the steering wheel without driving the truck for ease of demonstrating / duplicating the issue for my dealer. (See Video Below)

I was able to reproduce this for the dealer in the service drive when I brought my vehicle in for service a couple weeks ago. It was easy to feel / hear and they were going to look into it. After looking at the issue they said they couldn't fix it because there weren't any bulletins or SSMs for the issue.

If one of the Ford Reps on this site could help me out by working with my dealer to explain the known issue and the 'D' steering gear replacement that seems to be correcting this issue I would sure appreciate it. I would love to get this issue corrected. It's not only extremely annoying to hear / feel in the steering wheel, but it just doesn't feel safe either.

I test drove 2 2013 FX4s similiar to mine and neither of them had the issue.

Hello fx4gxp,
In the spring of this year my EPAS and lower steering shaft was replaced, but only after many phone calls to the Dearborn truck plant AND after posting a video like yours on YouTube. Though my new EPAS is a "C" series, the outcome could not be better. Drives and tracks perfect. There is a Ford rep on this thread and her name is Crystal; she can assist you. Best wishes, Combat Vet.

It had a level, mud tires, and 20 inch wheels.. Ford made me remove them and prove it wasn't that.. Which was bs. But ford paid for the uninstall and re install and the rack after i proved them wrong.

well winter is here again up in Canada and now the temps are -10C and lower mine hammers so hard i had to pull over to make sure my tire wasn't coming off. this will be my 3rd rack( 2 last winter and 1 this winter). once i get this one replace i am going to buy a dodge 3500. i use this as a work truck so the down time alone has cost me a lot of money.

Hi fx4gxp,

I want to get your information into the hands of your regional customer service manager (CSM) so they can help. Send me a private message (PM) with your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership info.

Thanks!

Crystal

Default still junk

lovely i have had 3 replacement racks in my 2013 fx4 appearance pkg with only 11,980 miles on it. The last one that i had put on was months ago and it still kinda had a hint of rattle sound and vibration in the steering wheel. I have 34's on it with a level kit and i have had b4 the 1st replacement had the tech take the level kit off with the neg batt cable disconnected and still made noise and had kit put back on. Then Had 2nd rack put on with me showing the tech the thread bout taking the neg batt cable off to DO ANYTHING WITH THE FRONT END DISCONNECTED and it was still horrible. Then had the 3rd rack replaced 6 months ago and with the same info to the tech IE disconnect the neg batt cable to do the swap and the alignment. It was still slightly noticeable clunk and vibration in the steering wheel for the last 6 months but i thought since i live in wyoming and the weather is always changing. You all say u hear more noise when its warmer well I'm quite the opposite, i like i said this summer had slight noise and vibration threw the summer but now its cold out now and i have 2 miles of dirt road i have to drive to my house that i drive at less that 10 mph cause I'm **** and don't want my truck out of alignment and the interior to rattle and shake like my 1980 f250 but for damn sake this thing has gotten worse now its cold. I no combat vet supposedly got good luck but so far I've gotten nothing but shafted. This is BullS**t i think this is the worst truck I've ever owned. Ive had more problems with this front end crap than I've had with the last 3 trucks I've owned in the last 6 years. I really wish i wouldn't of gotten rid of my nissan titan i traded on this piece of S**t . Im getting worse gas millage with this ford that i did with my titan plus my titan was sound no rattles no clunks, nothing this is ridiculous for a 55000 truck with only 11000 miles i shouldn't be having these problems. other than the noise and having to go to the dealership and racking up miles i do love the truck but this is ridiculous . if anyone knows of who to contact or what to do to get this crap fixed plz let me no and m tired of the run around call her call him email him keep being a squeaky wheel is a bunch of s#@t cause it doesn't work. Good luck to u all and GOD SPEED

Sincerely F(OUND (ON) R(OAD) D(EAD)

Default Frustrated

I got 14 years and almost 200,000 miles out of my last truck and swore I would never by another new truck because trying to get anything fixed under a warranty is a joke. Then, because I am a moron, I go and spend 43k on this new F150, and now I couldn't regret it more.

I have the same issue with the steering (along with a few other minor issues). The dealer told me "it may just be normal for your truck". Called Ford to complain and, after about an hour of phone prompts, it turns out I wasted about an hour.

If anyone has any suggestions or knows any dealers in the suburban Philadelphia area that are worth going to, I'm all ears. At this point I don't have a lot of confidence that this vehicle is going to live up to my expectations. I'm probably gonna end up trading for another brand (and taking a big loss on my investment).
