I've seen some guys hang a piece of chain from the trailer hitch just long enough to touch the ground. Wonder if that would cure the static shock problem?

Umm the op was almost 6 years ago. Details mean everything, if he hasn't shocked himself into figuring out humidity plays a key rule here I doubt he ever will.

as a firefighter I recommend NOT doing this. Chain drags ground and starts fires.

Agreed! A ground strap is the way to go.
