You're all wrong. It's the emergency EcoBoost spooling system. When your turbos fail you breathe into it to spool the turbos. Ford released a statement advising you get the passenger to perform this action as it will take the drivers eyes off the road.

The sensor itself won't be in the vent but the vent is still there.
So if you have a digital readout of the interior temp, and can adjust it, the sensor is behind the holes.
If you don't and you just have a blue (left) to red (right) turn knobby thing, the holes are still there but there is no sensor.

And I'm just going to echo you, yes its the auto climate control sensor. This question comes up about every 6 months, with people swearing its the turn signal speaker.
I even took my dash apart to show people, if you don't have auto climate control, there's nothing there.
