seriously, though, if you are worried about it, why not wire in an inline switch for the opener? stick it somewhere out of the way that you can access, like the glovebox or arm rest and then you have the luxury of the open when you so desire, and the security of an opener that doesn't work the rest of the time.

Agreed but one of the techniques currently in use involves the vehicle opener...
So far the best suggestion is to lock out the opener at night. I could be convinced of learning that habit over forgetting to haul my opener around.

Don't keep the remote on the visor that is the most likely place a thief will look for it. You can leave it in the center console which locks, clip it under the dash lip below steering wheel, clip it in the door pocket, or somewhere you can reach but it's out of sight.
Someone else stated the newer garage doors have a lockout feature which is good but if you don't you can plug the garage door opener into a timer and set multiple times for when you get home or completely lock it out over night.
