This is how you tear up your truck trying to help someone else. Securing your truck to something else and winching from the front is a great way to bend or diamond a frame. Best thing to do is set the brakes on your truck and then winch. If your truck slides then you don't have enough truck. You can also ****** block your winch to something else and use it as a dead man and take the pressure off your truck.

X2. Also throw a jacket or something over the cable preferably in the center.

Guess I'm lucky never broke anything yet. I do have a heavy chain in a towel to throw over the cable.

Like null name said the rough country winch mount is a no brainer. installs easy and fits everything. I installed a 10,000 lb Warn Zeon. A tight fit but got it to work. Have not had to use it but once in 6 months. Opted for the steel cable as the synthetic was $100+ more and had to be treated with more care than I was willing to give. As for the Warn only time will tell if it is worth the extra $. What I do know is my buddy bought a 12k lb smitty built which broke the second or third time he used it and he is glad that he got the extended warranty from 4WP. Good luck la leo. The guys on here are full of great information that will help you make the right decision for you.

The biggest issue with winching someone out, as fishbones said, is damage to your drive train or related. That's why I suggested pulling them out or telling them to find another friend to help them. I would not want to damage the truck.

Yes, I took them up on the offer to refund. I haven't received it yet but hopefully it will be forthcoming soon. I ordered a Warn VR 10000-S which I will be installing today as a replacement.

I got the Warn installed this past Saturday and overall it was very straightforward. The Warn fit on the RC mount plate perfectly so the only modifications I made were relatively minor. First, I didn't care for the control box mount that came with the Warn so I repurposed the old mount from RC control box which consisted of nothing more than drilling a hole to accommodate the new bolt pattern. Second, the bolts to install the hawse weren't long enough so I went to Lowe's and got some that were 1/4" longer. I have two remaining modifications to make which include replacing the hawse nuts with some acorn nuts simply for aesthetics, and installing some D-ring isolators on my tow hooks which should be here this week. Note that the battery cables on the Warn are *extremely* long so you'll have to route those things in your engine bay so they remain out of the way.

I haven't used the winch yet and probably won't for awhile. The main purpose of having it is for snow and the rare trip we take to the beach and drive out on the sand.

I like the external appearance of the hawse much better than the Rough Country system. The Warn hawse is much less conspicuous than the rollers from Rough Country. Hopefully the winch will be ready to work when I need it!

Here ya go. I'm very satisfied with how clean the final install looks. I didn't realize how conspicuous the 4-way roller fairlead was until now. For my purposes I think this will serve me well.
