Don't get confused now. Low first gear equates to more power off the line.

Where the heck were all of you smart guys BEFORE I bought my XLT w/3.31 JK.
Now, why the heck would they put a tow package on my XLT w/3.31 rear end? Guess they saw me coming.

psmalley,

I think Ford (as well as other truck makers) put the highway gears in trucks to help boost their overall fuel economy numbers. There are plenty of folks who will go to the dealership just wanting a truck and they don't think about or even know about things such as gear options, open vs. limited slip, towing capacities, etc. They go in and see a truck in the color that they want and/or in the price range that they can afford and they drive it away with no questions asked about options. Then there are those like myself that use the truck for towing a fair amount of the time that will only take exactly what we want and if they don't have it on the lot, they go find it or they order what I want.

For everyday driving with no load, you will be okay with the 3.31 gears but you will not be the first off the line at the light and you will not be the first to the top of the hill with any load in the bed or hooked to the hitch. As a daily commuter, that setup will work, it's just not the best setup for everyone. As long as you are happy with your setup and it works well for you then that is all that matters. Enjoy your truck and don't worry about it. Look at it this way, you can squeeze a few more miles out of a tank than I can.
