rear wheel axle lock?

If conditions are such that you could get stuck, I would engage it before that happens. Getting stuck and then engaging it would likely result in two tires spinning and going no where - especially in snow/mud.

It engages/disengages a lot quicker than 4wd so it is handy when you only need a little more to get going again. I was dragging a trailer out of a snowbank yesterday and spun so pulled the locker and got the traction I needed then just pushed it back in and kept going.

It does wonders. On the 2015 I drove I got it in the mud slid around and locked it just for gits and shiggles and it was almost like 4x4 my 03 with a open diff is horrible in anything and everything had to use 4x4 in the same spot in my truck.

Although I do not doubt the truth of your words. 4x4 and locking diffs are not a magic get of jail free card when in the soft stuff.
