If conditions are such that you could get stuck, I would engage it before that happens. Getting stuck and then engaging it would likely result in two tires spinning and going no where - especially in snow/mud.

It engages/disengages a lot quicker than 4wd so it is handy when you only need a little more to get going again. I was dragging a trailer out of a snowbank yesterday and spun so pulled the locker and got the traction I needed then just pushed it back in and kept going.

It does wonders. On the 2015 I drove I got it in the mud slid around and locked it just for gits and shiggles and it was almost like 4x4 my 03 with a open diff is horrible in anything and everything had to use 4x4 in the same spot in my truck.

What is the fun of employing it before you get stuck..... getting unstuck is half of the fun for me!

Although I do not doubt the truth of your words. 4x4 and locking diffs are not a magic get of jail free card when in the soft stuff.
