Default Rear bumper dimples

Are those things that look like big plastic rivets an actual fastener or are they part of the reverse sensing system? We have a high speed labeler at work equipped with a Proxguard. There are metal rods positioned around the machine and when you get too close, a row of LED's will light up sequentially and if they get too high the machine will stop.

I presume the reverse sensing system works in a similar way...haven't seen one in action yet.
