Default Question and possible Problem 4x4

I have a 2011 screw 4x4 xlt. tonight i put it in 4wd for the first time and when i went to park and turned the wheels it felt like the front end was wanting to lock up and it would jerk the entire truck. I've owned a couple Ford vehicle that were 4wd and never had this issue. is this normal? Anyone know what could be causing that?

What were the road conditions?

I was told not to engage 4x4 on dry pavement.

Your wheels probably didn't break traction while turning and turning sharply in 4wd is tough on the steering anyways. When all wheels are engaged and turning if traction doesn't break they get drug along a different turn radius while providing power so you get a rough turn and that feeling it wants to lock. Could that be it?

^This. You shouldn't have 4wd engaged when turning sharply into a parking spot unless your on mud. It can cause serious stress on your drivetrain if the wheels cannot slip.

Yep, what they said!

Unless it's all snow then you shouldn't be in 4wd. There was probably ice and wet pavement and it didn't slip.

Wink

I agree. I have property in West Virginia. Before I had the lanes fixed, most of the time I needed to be in 4x4. When I went to park next to the trailer in the driveway, and it wasn't that muddy or wet, the front end felt like it wanted to bind if I turned the wheels sharply. I just had to make sure I took it out of 4x4 once I got to the trailer. Doesn't sound like you have a problem. But if you're concerned have it looked at to be sure. No harm in that.....
