Default Programmers 101

I'm wondering if someone can shed some light on the programmers that are on the market that are compatible with our F150's 5.0 or 3.5.

I've never owned or used a programmer before and would like to know what i am getting into first.

Any and all input welcome!

I know about the different manufactures of programmers, but not sure exactly what I will be getting myself into if purchasing one.

Can I buy one that will help increase power output, help gas mileage, modify speedo to calibrate for larger tires... do I need 3 separate tuners or is there an all in 1 package available.
