I bought the first 2004 F150 that my local dealer sold when the new model hit the showroom floor. It was an Yellow F150 STX. I wasn't that crazy about the color so I had the hood and the tonneau cover painted.

I disliked the fact that the truck didn't have a tach. Immediately I started do some research. After getting one of the Ford Motor Company Service Manual CD's, I discovered all of the models had the same part numbered main under dash wire harness. I thought there was no way one of the instrument cluster from another model wouldn't fit and work in the STX.

The service manager contacted someone at the Ford Truck Division and was told that any other instrument cluster other than what came in the truck would not work.

I took a risk and order an instrument cluster for a FX4 and had it installed and it worked perfectly.

"And now you know the rest of the story."

I've done that with cars in the past, get a cluster off ebay though for $50 and put in... one with lower miles showing and a tach! always did that in beater cars though so the miles thing didn't matter much.

So in the end all it is is the cluster from an 04 FX4? What was with the riddle?
