P0340 and P0344 Codes
2010 XLT 5.4L 4WD
Timing job was done at around 55K that included new phaser, chain, tensioners and VCT valves. Sensors were not replaced to my knowledge and I doubt they were. Truck now has close to 111K on it.
Back on August 19 I just got the P0340 code. I unplugged and plugged back in the camshaft position sensor harness plug. On both sides just to be on the safe side. Code went away after about 10 miles.
Today, I got P0340 and P0344. Tried the same thing and drove home. 20 miles total and the codes never went away.
According to TorquePro:
P0340 = Powertrain Camshaft position sensor "A" circuit (Bank 1 or single sensor)
P0344 = Powertrain camshaft position sensor "A" circuit intermittent (Bank 1 or single sensor)
So, I am hoping that since unplugging and plugging in the sensors back on August 19th (almost 3 months ago) that it is just the sensor that is bad. Engine doesn't seem to be running any differently than before the first time the code appeared or after. No new noises and still as smooth as before. I would think if it were something else, unplugging the sensor and replugging it in wouldn't have made the code go away.
So, do the sensors just screw out of the valve cover? Does it stop when it is in the right position when putting in the new one or do I have to pay attention to how far the current one is in and try to get the new one in at the same point?
Is this one of those times I should use OEM or can I use another brand? If another brand, what is the best replacement brand?
Or should I be looking at something else first?
Thanks!

Okay, I'm dumb. the camshaft sensor isn't in the valve cover. Duh!!
So, is this another one of those times where I should use OEM on the 5.4 or is any brand okay to use. If any brand, what is a good brand to get and are there any to avoid?
