Default opinions on trade?

I have a guy wanting to trade me an 01 f250 crew cab short bed lariat. Has the 7.3. Auto. Never owned a diesel and dont know alot about them. But i like them. He said tranny was rebuilt 50k ago. Alot of new parts. But has 285k miles....mines an 09 xlt supercrew. With 109k miles. The deal we have is he is going to pay $8500 boot. Which after payoff on mine would put me in that truck about $10,500. So people with experience from both what would you do?

from my understanding...

-diesel gas is more $$
-diesel engines need more maintenance
-the truck is 8 years older than yours - that is including interior and exterior components
-that 7.3 is LOUD, even in the cab

i wouldn't do it.

I'm not as up on the diesel market, but 10,500 for a truck with almost 300k miles man I donk about that. If an injector fails, it can be a very expensive repair. Not to mention the fuel pump, oil pump etc.

I just moved from a high mileage diesel (not that high though, wow) to my F150 and I wouldn't go back.

I never need diesel in my life, so i wouldnt. But if you must have and truck is in great condition... why not? I heard 7.3 was great motor. You prob need mechanic to inspect the truck tho.

i cant really help...

I have had two 7.3 diesels. The 7.3 is the best diesel Ford has built and you will not find many who will argue with that. They are literally bulletproof and very easy to work on. After I sold my last 7.3 I had 3 Ram Hemi's before buying a '13 Ram Cummins. The new diesels have sensors that monitor sensors, all kinds of emissions crap, and DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) STAY AWAY FROM THEM; even Ford's. I was used to the old 7.3 where it was very basic with no emissions. That thing would burn anything diesel, fuel oil, off road, kerosene (mixed with #2). I would not be afraid of the mileage. I sold mine to a friend who is a Ford tech and it now has 400K miles on it. It takes 16 quarts of oil, change fuel filter every 15K, drain separator every so often(takes 5 minutes and its under the hood), and diesel fuel is higher priced. That is about the only maintenance there really is that's different. People always harp on "more maintenance"; but that's all there really is. It is also not as expensive for parts like everyone says it is. I used to race mine all the time at the track and have done injectors, fuel pumps, propane injection, chips, etc. Most expensive thing is the injectors and you don't buy them new, you get them rebuilt and then you go high performance (Swamps injectors). Man I miss my 7.3!

Then I would steer clear. Fuel is more expensive, Maintenance is more expensive, and parts are more expensive.

I came from a Duramax. Love the power, hated the high price of everything.
