Yes, the stock cables can handle sufficient loads when maintained and kept in good condition. However, over the years they can fray and weaken. If you're on top of it, simply replace them. If you don't, You can get a big surprise if they ever break while loading or carrying something on the tailgate.

I've seen the cables break once under load, it wasn't pretty.
