Just as the 3000 mile change was hard to die so is the 5000 mile one also.

I go by the IOLM.

I change the oil with greater frequency. I'm not worried about the impact on the environment with greater changes. My truck runs more efficient and that used oil gets recycled and used for other purposes.

I let the Prius drivers worry at night as they use electricity generated from coal fired power stations.

I change my own oil every 6-7k, it takes maybe half an hour. If you prefer to have a professional do it, take it to the dealership if you trust them. I would not advise taking it to a Jiffy Lube or other cheap shop. They are notorious for ripping you off, or screwing it up so badly you need to be towed within a week of the "service". (still pissed about my wife's car and took 6 months to be reimbursed for the $49 oil change)


Long story short: do it yourself, drink a beer, learn about your truck.

I read somewhere, can't remember if it was in the manual or what, but if you offroad and/or reach high rpm often then you should change your oil around 5k miles. I've just been following that since I do both of those.

That may be true, but it isn't in the manual. (At least not a 2013)

Only reference is using the IOLM or 1 year or 10,000 miles whichever comes first. The only reference to 5000 miles is if you inadvertently reset the meter early, then do it 5000 miles since your last change.

There is a chart that references what you are taking about with high towing, offroad conditions, etc. but the chart is telling you when to expect the IOLM to tell you to change it, not for you to do it based on that mileage.

People can do whatever they want. Its their truck and their money. But there is too much stuff put out as fact instead of "this is what I think is best."

Had a 2011 F250 6.7. Same discussion went on there. One of the engineers was on the forum and said that they had designed the engine to exceed 10,000 mile oil changes, however they new people would not accept that. So they artificially lowered the change interval. The IOLM on it typically came on at about 7500 miles.

I have a '93 Lightning and have used Mobil 1 Synthetic and Motorcraft filters on it since new. It now has 160,000 miles on it with no leaks and so little consumption that you can't tell if it has used any at 5,000 mile intervals.

Am using the same 5,000 mile increments on my '13 Ecoboost which now has over 23,000 on it.

I live in the Florida Panhandle where it is very hot during the summer and quite humid year round.

Absolutely no mechanical issues with the old or new Ford.

I do the changes myself and keep records of oil / filter purchase and change intervals.

Many people go against my decision of doing my changes at 3K, but it makes me sleep better at night. I recycle the oil so its not like i dump it down the local sewer drain. I understand that i can go longer due to the advances in oil, filters and vehicle design and even my blackstone report but feel better doing them at 3K. And as i said cost isnt a factor so i'll continue to do them at 3K.

I change around 3000. I only put on about 9k a year with lots of short trips. I don't have to change that often, but it's cheap insurance to me.
