Default New vs Used

Being the opinionated group we are, I'm hoping you will chime in on my options. I've got a '98 F150 4x4 ext with 250,000 miles... reman engine, rebuilt tranny... it's starting to get a little rust and I have a stripped idler pulley bolt that if I have to replace, means replacing the front engine cover.

Here's the question... I get A plan pricing and there are current incentives dropping the cost of a new crew cab 4x4 eco boost xlt with limited options from $39000 to $30000... Is this enough of a discount to offset the depreciation of new ? It looks to me that a 2-3 year old low mile similar used model is $25000-$30000.... is there any reason to go used?

New with more power and better fuel economy plus new warranty for 30000. Or used with less power and worse fuel economy and warranty out or near out for 25000 to 30000. Cant think of one reason to consider used.

My view is that used prices are highly inflated at this time.

If you can get A plan, buy new. I bought mine on D plan, and while there is no book on the '11, I am still in equity if it was a '10. You're going to be buying a $40k truck for about $32k on A plan, so that's a heck of a deal.

Default followup

as a followup... Blue Book on my '98 is $3100 at it's worst. I was thinking it should be worth between $4000-$5000.

98 F150
4.6
4x4
extended 3 door
xlt
rebuilt motor with 60k on it, rebuit tranny with 40k,
new tires (Michilens) and brakes in the last year
a little rust on the under side of the rockers...that's it. otherwise good paint.

You need to look up NADA, nobody uses Blue Book. You're probably not going to get more than $1000-1500 on trade.

You are trading, and buying a new truck at wholesale, so you are going to get wholesale back. And a 250k mile truck is going to be considered rough, and on the low end of that.

THIS.

I am sure the dealer won't even resell yours, they will just auction it. Or maybe sell it to some other little used car dealer guy for him to resell it.

A 13 year old 250,000 mile truck will be a hard one to get decent money out of.

The new one is a good price though. And if you keep them for that long and put a quarter million on the clock, then I think you get your money's worth out of them.
