Default Need some opinions on the 5.0 before taking the plunge

Hello! Long time lurker, first time poster. Signed up just today so I could get some impressions on what people think of the 5.0. Been driving an 04 LVL 2 ranger for 5 years now and while I enjoyed it, I think its time to get back into a full-size. The trucks I am looking at are a 2010 with the 3v 4.6 and a 2013 with the 5.0. Both under 50k miles.

Bit of backstory: The last F150 I had was an 02 FX4 SCREW. Loved it. Bought it with 80k and drove it to 180K and the 5.4 never gave me any of the problems I read about people having. I understand that while reading someones complaint online isnt the most accurate way to judge a product given the small size of people who experience problems compared to how many people own them, I would like some posters experience with the two motors in question.

Ive read here and seen on youtube some people are having some kind of knock issue with their 5.0s. Is this a widespread and well known problem? If it is, is it not a big deal like the 3v 5.4 cam-phaser issue? Or is it worse like the spark plug spitting issues some had? Are there any other known issues? What kind of mileage are people getting with the 3.55 rearend? Id really like to hear from people who have them before I decide to drop 20k on a truck.

I also heard the 3v 4.6 has some issues as well. Advice on it would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.

Big fan of the 5.0.
88K on my 2011. i would buy the 5.0 again.
My buddy wrecked his 2012 5.0 and he replaced it with an eco boost and he says he is getting much worse mileage with it towing his boat.

I love my 5.0. The tick wasn't a big issue and on my truck, it was caused by a leaky exhaust manifold. I have the very first year of the 5.0 and a fairly early build time (Oct 2010) and have had very minor issues with my truck. I don't think you'll regret the 5.0 .

I love my 5.0 plenty of power for what I need it to do and I'm averaging 20mpg consistently as my daily driver - although 18 out of my 23 miles to work is highway. Plus you can't beat that sound!

2013 and 2014 are the best years for both the 5.0 and the EB. Go for the 5.0.

I have a 12', so far so good. I can't help with the mileage part as I have 3.73's. But if you want to know how the higher gears are for mileage Im getting 17.3 L/100kms or 13.6mpg. I have a 10 minute commute at with varying speeds between 30-60mph. Those are city numbers as I don't do a lot of highway driving

I have a '14 screw long bed 5.0. I drive 22 miles one way on my commute. 4 miles or so is in town. The rest is windy rural highway. I get 16.7 avg per the lie-o-meter on the dash.

Wow, I didnt expect answers so fast. I get that the 5.0 is superior to the 4.6 power wise but is the 3v 4.6 a good motor as well? Im leaning towards the 2013 with the 5.0 as its a regular cab and Id love to have one of those again but there is about 4k difference in price between the two.

Can anybody explain what exactly the knocking/ticking noise is that Ive read the 5.0s have?

3 years newer and a better engine is well worth the extra 4K. The 4.6 is ok, but it is also the same motor in the old Crown Vics with a different power band.
