Default Need some friendly advice

Situation:

I have a '10 scab STX. I love the truck. However...i have a 2 month old son...in a rear facing child seat. You get it right? Pita getting him in/out. It doesn't bother me so much, but my wife was all, "oh it would be nice if you had 4 real doors." And put the idea in my head...of looking around for a new ride. This time a screw.

So i found a truck that will do the job. An '11 fx4 screw 5.0. The towing capabilities pop in my head too, because I'm moving across country in the fall, towing a trailer.

The dilemma is, it has to be financially feasible, obviously.

Mind you i have not spoken to the dealer yet.

The details:

My truck: '10 STX with 33k miles. Pristine, never in an accident. Taken care of to the T. Kbb/nada value is $20k for trade. I still owe $13.5k.

New (to me) truck:

The info(easier than typing):

Carfax was available, and it was in a "minor accident." Drivers side fender.

My questions are:

1. Do i have much negotiating room on the fx4? It does have the lux package making it a little more $$.

2. Considering my trade in value vs what i owe, would it be possible to get into the '11 for $350 or less a month?

Thanks for any HELPFUL advice.

Can't help you with the monthly rate, but I can say that there is always room for negotiation. The price seems about average, if a bit high for a used truck. I wouldn't get outrageous with a ridiculous offer, but try to bring them down a bit or throw in some extras.

I know you are trying to keep it financially feasible, but for a couple grand more you can get a new '13 fx4 with warranty.

For your needs/budget, are there any used xlt screws around?

A quick check of a car payment calculator shows a 29k loan for 72 months at 5% with a payment of $460ish.

(Assuming u get used truck for 34k, and get 5k in equity on your trade. Rough numbers, but it's always better to figure to low than high. If you get a bit more off the used one and a bit more for your trade, the numbers obviously get better)

A new balance/loan of 22000 at 5% for 72 months will get you a payment of 354.XX

So you could add about 9 grand to what you owe currently and get the payment you want, but for 72 months.

I knew this was the right place to ask. Thanks guys. I haven't even looked at new '13s. My guts telling me i wouldn't be able to swing that. But we'll see, who knows, i may look at them if i end up checking this truck out.

This truck is also Ford certified with a 100k mile warranty. Don't know if that matters or not.

I also check the kbb of the '11 with a minor accident and its a little over $30k. Again not sure if that would change things.

My current rate is 2.9%. Would that be unreasonable to get again?

mb, nice truck there! I don't know, but I think I would also consider a '13 model, just check one out, won't hurt. I do like all the luxury stuff on that one though!

Oh, and I have a credit union that has great rates on vehicles... Hold on, I'll check... Yep, 1.74% for up to 60 months - Pentagon Federal Credit Union. If you are a cu member, check those out. Also, SHOP for a loan just as much as you do for a truck!

I'd love to see stats on how many vehicles get traded each yr due to those space hungry rear facing seats.

I paid $3K more than that for my 12 FX4 new. Nav, 20's, moonroof, lux pkg. So I'd say you have a huge amount of negotiating room with that truck.

If it were me, I'd definitely consider going new over used, esp if you can get 30K less miles for about $3K more. It would be a bit of a trip from MA to OH, but you might want to check out http://www.fairwayford.us/

Just throwing it out there for another data point.

Price a '13 first at that dealer, if for no other reason than to show his '11 is priced high compared to what he is selling the 13's for. Don't show interest in the '11 first.

Again, thank you all for the input. The more i hear, the more confident i get! Haha. And i will def check out a '13, at least for the bargaining chip.

Did that with my wifes escape, new ones were only 4k more than the used! Mentioned that a few times at a few different places and we got one sooo low we were able to pay cash for it. This was 2 years ago of course.
