Need help re-installing instrument cluster (reset?)
2013 STx. I removed the speedo/tach to mess with the "chime speaker". Plugging the cluster back into the harness, the Tach spun down like this, and is bumping against the limit. Buzzing, trying to go further. The speedo also vibrates a little below the zero.
Key on, they do not return to the zero position. Engine running, the tach uses the position shown as "zero", and moves up a little showing idle RPMs down below the zero. The speedo does not move at all when driving.
I opened it up and manually reset the needles at "zero", then plugging it in, it goes back to this (wrong) position.
Is there a proper way to reset this instrument?
I got the engineering test program going:
=========
1) insert the key in the ignition
2) Hold down the reset button
3) rotate the key to the RUN position (not start)
4) keep holding the RESET button untill the message center reads ENGINEERING MODE
(about 5 seconds)
5) you can now start the engine if you wish (not required)
==========
In this pic its on the gauge test step.
It performed the gauge sweep with all guages, including the tach. But the tach maxed at about 5000 then dropped back down vertical, can't seem to index itself to rest at zero. Starting engine the tach moves up halfway to zero, where idle speed might be.
The speedo went all the way to 120 then reset to rest at zero. The speedo does NOT register speed (remains on zero when driving) but the digital odometer works normal (counts up the miles as normal).
I'm doing pioneering chime work here , can anybody help me with this instrument?
Tried lots of things, disconnected battery, etc. Tach offset by 2000RPM, and the speedo needle does not move at all. You can see in test mode it registers 25 MPH but speedo is zero.
No Joy.
Ordered a used cluster for $71. Used cluster has exactly the same partnumber as mine, but build date 2 months before mine.
I sure hope it doesn't have to be flashed by the dealer to recognize this new speedo.
well your not supposed to manually move the dial, you evidently screwed up the calibration, you will need ids to recalibrate tach or maybe even reprogram cluster with new calibration, good luck.
I moved the fuel gauge too, and some of the temp gauges but the test sweep runs them thru their range and sets it in place. I moved the speedo, and the test sweep runs speed indicator from zero to 120 and back to zero, but the speedo needle does move at all when driving.
I will certainly NOT be moving needles on the replacement speedo.
What is ids? You mean kids? Got kids, need luck!
Can anybody tell me if the truck needs to be flashed to accept the new (used) speedo?
once you screw up the calibration it is almost impossible for you to be able to reset it yourself. Your best bet now is to contact a speedo shop as calibrating those instrument is a highly specialized craft.
You will also need the speedo shop to fix the mileage on your new cluster. Otherwise you might end up with too many or to few miles on the odomoter. too many miles will hurt your resale value, too few and you are at risk of committing fraud.
My advice is to call you local speedo shop and ask them what would be more cost effective, fixing your current one or configuring the "new" one.
Are you certain that odo miles are stored in the cluster? Please confirm, so I can cancel my order before they ship (if necessary). Seller wrote "27k miles" in description, my truck has 12k, this would be bad.

The Odometer information is stored in both the PCM and the Instrument cluster. however the info in the instrument cluster supersedes the info in the PCM.
Here is how it works.
If you plug in a new from the factory, never used, cluster, the cluster will initialize to the truck and get the odomoter info from the PCM.
If you plug in an already initialized, used, cluster, it will already have the odometer info from the old PCM and will continue to tick up from that point.
A speedometer shop has the necessary equipment to either reset the used cluster so that it initializes next time you plug it in and pulls the info from the PCM, OR to reset the mileage on the used cluster to match your existing cluster. It depends on the manufacturer and the type of cluster.
your best bet is to look for a speedometer shop in your area and call them to see what your options are and how much it will cost to fix it.
