Almost sounded like you were trying to switch on a hill. That might have been the problem. 4x4 systems like to be on level ground to engage or disengage properly.

I wish, it was a level road in a subdivision. And I still believe that when it grabs I'm not getting power to the rear wheels, kinda like a front wheel drive truck

My shift motor crapped out and was doing weird things. It's easy to change.

Hello all new to the forum here. So I just purchased this new to me 2011 fx4 Ecoboost. So when I purchased the solenoid was missing the tubing to the iwe system. So I used it as a bargaining tool and got a good price for the truck. So upon further inspection the lines were brittle and would just crumble throughout the whole system. I tested the solenoid and it would engage 4x4 hi and low and shut off the vac at the solenoid just the iwb’s We’re always engaged so I knew the tcase was fine and the system was good it just needed some new vac hose. So to get me by I bypassed the bad vac hose system and ran some hard vac hose to the iwe’s and connected them to the solenoid so I can drive around in 2wd without the cv axles spinning with the wheels. So after doing this the solenoid stopped shutting off and I started to get the check 4x4 message right after engine start up. I replaced the solenoid thinking it just went bad but I got the same result with the new one. Got my power probe out and started checking fuses and they all checked out. I provide power to the ground leg on the solenoid it clicks and shuts off the vacuum so at this point I think the tcm is running a check on startup and it doesn’t like something thus giving me the check 4x4 message and disabling 4x4. Any ideas why it’s unhappy?

This summer I picked up a high risk (205K mile) 2010 Ford F-150 with the 11.2K tow option with the Limited Slip differential that sounded like the rear end was going to fly apart when cutting it hard. The Chevy dealership had a former Ford tech on staff and they had him to pull the back cover so I could see inside and it looked normal and he said the cover had been off before and expected it got a new differential years ago . He resealed the cover and refilled and added the actual Ford Limited Slip additive and said over time it should get better when the LS additive worked in to the clutches.

Near by is an acre gravel parking lot that is flat so I spent an hour driving it in forward and backwards in tight circles and figure eights and over time the LS works well (will chop gravel with both rear wheels) and is smooth glass.

4x4 issues that popped up sounded like the OP described and this being the first 4x4 I ever drove the shifting reminded me of the old Ford farm trucks with the electric shifting 2 speed rear ends. When I went under the transfer there was the same electric shifting motor set up. It got somewhat better shifting 2x/H4x4/L4x4 after 15-20 cycles but only so so. I drained and filled the transfer case with the Ford transfer case fluid and added about 4 oz Archoil AR9100 at midpoint in the refill process. After a few weeks and another 50 shifting cycles it seems to be working as I think it worked when new.

From working with the old 2 speed differentials I knew lack of use caused operational issues 50 years ago. Now when I am on gravel roads or long driveways I do the cycles a few times and when possible backwards and forwards lock to lock circles to lube the LS clutches. Going 10K or 100K miles without using 4x4 features is not idea for sure but it can often happen for interstate daily drivers. It is kind of one of those use it or lose it kind of things it seems to me.

2000 5.4 2v. 191,xxx. Running strong and quiet. Use for 18 hr runs of 1100 miles at 80-85mph straight thru, uses 1 qt.

Cant think of a better rig for reliability.

1 alternator.
Ball joints
coilover conversion
shocks
brakes
spark plugs.

I know now the ac compressor is getting a little noisy.

I worked in
ORLANDO LIMO SERVICES and their all cars are well maintained and repaired it's not always a bad to choice to buy a rented car because some companies care and some not. But If you Want to buy a rented car you should check it.
