I whaled on that shock for about 4 hours today with a pry-bar, and could not get it in. It would keep sliding up the pry bar. I had to put everything back together and do some more studying. I really don't want to have to remove the lower control arm/assembly, but I don't see any other way to get any more clearance. The axel just won't let the lca drop enough.

Did you have any issues getting the shock back in place? Did I wimp out too early? I plan to give in another whirl next weekend when I have more time.

Even w/ macpherson spring compressors I could not get the shock to shrink enough.
I had the same issue. I used a small flat pry bar. The kind you use to remove nails. I slid the pry bar into the socket on the lower control arm and pulled up onto the bottom of the shock. The best way for me to describe it was like using a shoe horn to put on a shoe. Bloody knuckles and about 45 for that task alone. Not fun

Wish I would have remembered this thread. I literally tossed one at the scrap yard today.

Interesting use of the bottle jack! I'm going to go the route of dropping the front bolt off the LCA. The front axle was really tight, and the hoses were pretty tight as well. And with my luck, they would no longer be tight if I used the bottle-jack method!

If I can't get the LCA loose, then I'm going to have to punt and have the alignment shop do it. It better look good after all this is said and done!
