mirror question?
I recently purchased a 2009 f150 fx4, and yes its my first ford and I'm very happy so far. But the only thing that bugs me is i cant get the power fold feature to work. The mirror glass says they are power fold but the switch does not, is it possible the previous owner swapped out mirrors? I'm not sure if the switch always says power fold or not, just going by the pics in the owners manual. Any suggestions would help,Thanks in advance.
What trim level do you have for the truck? I believe that in 2009/10 the only ones with power fold were King Ranch and Platinums (maybe Harley's but not sure). If the mirror glass says power fold, on both mirrors, then the fold motor is in the housing but the PO may have swapped the mirrors out to try to get folding but never got it working.I have a 2010 Lariat that I installed power fold mirrors on and I ended up hard wiring the pins because I couldn't get the OEM fold switch to work. The fold logic is part of the driver seat module and it seems the entire wiring connection isn't there on the Lariat trim package.Does your OEM switch have a fold icon on it? To fold, you should just momentarily pull the switch back (towards the back of the truck) when in the center position. To unfold you pull back again. If not, you may need to hard wire like I did. Mine work great after the rewire job.
My '11 FX2 has Power Fold mirrors. The little switch to adjust the mirrors - rotate it in between left and right, then pull back on it. When its in the center position it'll operate the Power Fold action.
Yeah, the 2011's have power fold mirrors in lots of trim levels now. Not so much with 2009/10's.
I just re-read the original post and see you have an FX4. So, no in 2009 this trim level did not have power fold. You will have to hard wire it.
The power fold is operated on pins 7 and 16 of the mirrors. I found that the motor is actually bi-directional so you apply positive to one pin and negative to the other to fold, reverse the polarity to unfold.
What you may want to do is just fab up a quick test cable to the 12v power point and confirm that both mirrors fold properly.
Here's my post from another thread with (hopefully) the info you'll need:
I can't post any pictures of the installation because I'm away from home for the next few months, but the job isn't all that complicated.
First, I bought OEM power fold mirrors from Tasca Ford online. If you call them up they can give you the correct part numbers for your year/model. I paid around $800 for the mirrors including shipping.
You then need to purchase a rocker switch as the OEM mirror fold switch won't work.
I bought one from digikey.com part number SW311-ND which cost $3.87 including shipping.
There's a write up on installing the mirrors for a 2005 model at:

The concept is the same for the 2010 model. However, I made a slight modification to my wiring. I didn't use any relays as I found the mirror motors don't pull that much power, so I just tapped into the 12V feed off the power window switch (pin 4 of the switch)
What I found is that the mirrors fold in when power is applied across pins 7 and 16 and fold out when the polarity is reversed on the same pins.
So, I wired the common pins of my DTDP rocker switch (the middle pins) to power and ground, then I ran a wire to pin 7 of the mirrors connecting to each side of the switch (one positive and one negative side) and another wire to pin 16 to the other side of the switch (one positive and one negative)
To get the wire through the door to the passenger side, I had to drill through the plastic housing for the loom connector as there is no hole through the cab.
To do this, I bought a 12" long 1/4" drill bit, opened the door and carefully drilled a hole on the front side of the connector. I was then able to fish the 2 wires from switch through the door jamb, under the dash to the passenger side and out the other door.
The last thing I'd note is that the pinout diagram included in the instructions is viewed from the wire side, so when holding the pin looking at the wires with the retaining clip on the right side, pin 16 is the top left pin and pin 7 is one down on the right
