Mileage question
I have searched the forum, and seen quite a few mileage threads. There seems to be a preponderance of folks claiming to get 15+ MPG in mixed city/hwy usage, with a similar setup to mine (and some saying 18!).
I am only getting 11.5-12; anyone have any thoughts? 5.4, 6 speed, 4x4, 3.55 LSD, and I have been babying it. 1100 miles on the truck; I don't have a cover (yet), which will help some, but it is not going to magically add 3 MPG to the truck.
TIA
Gary

Everyones idea of "babying it" is different. I never hit the expressway the entire last week and with a little babying it I do get 16 avg. With a little more heavy foot I can bring that down to 12 with no problem. Lots of stop and go traffic will do it too. Just so many varibles.
I'm at 3800 miles and getting 14 mpg. Mixed driving with more local than highway. Highway is much better but I haven't measured it yet. I'm sure the wheels are cutting mine down. I have FX4 5.4, 6 speed, 4x4, 3.7 LSD, 20 inches wheels.

As big_ole_truck states, you have to get a few thousand on the drive train for the true MPG to be apparent. I, too, realized better mileage after about 3,000 and now I have 5,000 (just today) and the truck is running the best it has, since the purchase date on June 1st. I have the same engine, trans, diff, setup as you do.
All the moving parts of the engine, trans, diff's, and axles, add a lot of friction when brand new and not broken in.
Also, as others indicate, a lighter touch on the pedal, will make a big difference and you can see it on the digital MPG readout. I have also noticed that the readout will be slow to change, unless it is reset often, for varied road types. On a recent trip to SoCal on I-5, I reset the meter every hundred miles or so, to get a feel for the mileage at any given point on the road, such as when climbing grades.
Some days around town I am getting close to 15 and on other days it is close to 12. On the freeway, with cruise control at 65-70 I have had read outs in the 18 to 21 MPG range. I also double check and do the miles vs. gallons math at fillup time. I am usually within .5 to 1.0 MPG from the readout vs. the pump reality.
