Default Mad and scared.Oil question.

Bought a 2011 xlt scab with 5.0 used with 34,000 miles love the truck. Dealer said and carfax said they replaced wiper blades, new air filter, rotated tires and new oil and filter. Blades and air filter were done, I checked. After driving about 1500 miles I was adjusting the headlights and thought I will check my oil. Not a drop on the dipstick. No oil light was ever on and pressure guage was fine. So I drove my father in laws car to get oil and filter. 4 and a half quarts came out. I suspect the dealer (Kia) thought all vehicles take about 5 quarts and that was what they put in it. My question is do you think engine is alright ?

Quite a bit short on oil. I would tend to say you should be okay, seeing that you drained it and are replacing it with on 1500 miles on the oil.

May want to have an oil analysis done on the used oil.

These trucks have a lot of reserve so they can go longer between oil changes (the more oil, the less it brakes down). If there were no leaks and you aren't burning it or anything else, I'd say it's had that much in it for the duration. You'd probably know by now if you were sucking air, as the engine would be toast.

I dont have a 5.0 but understand that for some, they use up oil. It is therefore possible that after 1500 mi., you are dealing with what will be a normal thing with your truck.

Keep an eye on your level going forward.

My 5.0 used 1 qt. In the first 700 miles when new. It's now at 6,000 mi. and uses .5 qt in 2,500 miles. A full oil change is 7.5 qt. with filter. I believe you are okay, and I say that because there is a windage tray in the oil pan which keeps oil from foaming and prevents cavitation. My dealer said they have seen a number of 5.0's come in for an oil change, and the level would be down as much as 3 qts. As another member said, just keep an eye on the level between changes. Enjoy the truck.

really.

I've put almost 4000miles on my truck and the oil level on the dipstick is same place it was when I drove her home. I feel bad for the ones with oil burners but **** happens.

Yup, correct. I forgot the 5.0 takes 7.5.

Btw - a qt will be in the filter so it would be 2 qts, or 1 qt more than what might be expected.

I feel like the dealer just put 5 quarts in it since the arent Ford specialist. I haven't seen any smoke and I no it is not leaking. I have heard about the excessive oil consumption in these engines. None the less I just wondered if any you might know if 3 quarts low for 1500 miles has shortened my engines lifespan or not.

I'm just hoping my 13 5.0 will be like my 12 5.0 and won't use any oil.

As for the OP I wouldn't worry to much but as others have suggested it wouldn't hurt to do an oil analysis
