Longevity Issues
I have a 2011 with a 5.0 and is 4 WD. I'm almost at 100k and I'm concerned with nickel & dime issues beyond 100k. I've already had some issues that have been concerning. I want to hear from others with similar trucks what kind of problems they have had. It would be nice to get a few years of no monthly payments, but I hate nuisance problems or major problems. Here are some problems I've had from 30k to 90k.
1. replaced drive shaft due to carrier bearing failure = $1200
2. replaced wiring harness in rear driver side door due to chafeing = $330
3. heat shield rattling = minor cost plus labor
4. right front brake caliper seized. replaced both front calipers, new rotors, new pads ....= $1000
5. need to repaint front bumper = $300
6. replaced windshield twice due to small cracks or chips = a few hundred $$
7. replaced rear window due to faulty defrost heaters = paid warranty deductible
8. replaced blower motor under dash due to noise = paid warranty deductible
9. shifter was stuck in park = no cost, dealer covered repair during purchase of truck

Dang, my 07 with 155K has had none of those issues you listed. Or any engine or transmission issues as well. I was looking to upgrade to a '13 or '14. I hear those are the best years for the 12th gens. Maybe just do a slight upgrade??
Well personally I wouldn't even count the brakes or windshields, as neither are surprising after 100k.. I don't find the other things too serious if it's all you've had to do, but you are right it is always a bit of a gamble when a vehicle begins to age...
Still though, the cost of monthly payments is a LOT of repairs...I can't wait to not have a payment again and will likely drive the truck into the ground (I say that now with a fairly new truck..

As mentioned, the cost of a payment is most likely always going to be more than the cost of the repairs on the truck. At this point it's up to you if you want to have to deal with the headaches and downtime associated with the repairs. I've run my '08 more-less into the ground and it's been a good choice for me. It's not my only form of transportation though, I got a car that I DD most of the summer.

I've always been proactive on maintenance. Change oil religiously, rotate tires, check or change fluids at regular intervals. I just went to the dealership for the 100k maintenance. Guess how much I paid for the following...
1. Front & rear differential maintenance
2. Transfer case maintenance
3. Front alignment
4. Lubricate all hinges and door locks.
5. Replaced rear brake pads and rotors.
6. Test battery and alternator.
They forgot to flush trans and coolant system but was not charged. I changed the spark plugs and belts myself.
