I'm hoping for some help or info with a potentially expensive repair on the horizon!
2010 F150 SCREW XLT, 5.4l V8, 4x4.
Recently my truck has been sporadically going into Limp Home Mode while taking off from a dead stop or slowing down to a stop from higher speeds. Doesn't happen every time and I can always clear it by shutting off and restarting the truck. I can usually 'feel' if the gear will engage due to a slight lurch forward or clunk or even slightly higher rpms indicating it's in gear. Once I clear the code, I can drive again but shifting seems off and hesitant or lagging. I can manually go through 1st, 2nd and 3rd without issue, so that may point more towards an electrical issue rather than mechanical is what I'm thinking. Having read through a number of similar issues on these forums I'm not quite sure where to go next with the P0731 code.
I have cleaned the MAF and will be doing the throttle body tomorrow along with a new battery. I'll be checking the fluid level when I get home today as I've read that could cause this issue as well. I just don't want to take it to a transmission shop and get hosed if it is indeed something fairly straight forward to repair or replace and get told it's a full overhaul. Truck has had regular maintenance and has 235,000km.
Based on everything I've read, it seems like I've got a bad first gear solenoid...what am I looking at for diagnosis and repair cost if that is the case?
Any help or info would be fantastic.

Reason: Added Info
So far my transmission has acted up twice in 137,000 miles. Once four years ago and once last summer.
My problems went away after exercising the control cable plugs, (unplug/plug back in several times). While the connection pins looked clean, I suspect some slight oxidation between contacts was removed. I did not touch the pins nor did I disconnect the battery.
The control cable plugs into the transmission toward the back on the passenger side with a rotating collar that unplugs/plugs it in. The other end has a bail for install/remove and is under the hood, passenger side firewall.
My symptoms were different than your’s with only third & reverse + wrench/speed sensor fail code the first time, only fifth & reverse no wrench/code the second time.
Thank you very much for this! One of the code descriptions listed that came up with the P0731 indicated a possible loose connection for the solenoid or something with the wiring harness (using Innova 3130f scanner), so this may very well be the ticket.
I will give this a try and come back with results.
Mine did the same thing. 2013 FX4 3.5 eco with 44k on it. Not sure what the code was. But did the some exact thing! Ended up being the “Lead Mold frame”. Took it to local dealer and had it back to me within. 24hr, free. Ford issued something for it.
