Default Light switch wiring question

I have a quick question that I think I know the answer to, but will see what the experts say. I currently have Front and Rear Blue Emergency LEDs as I’m a volly firefighter. The way its hooked up now is everything turns on via a single switch, so either all on or all off. Currently the switch is hooked up to a relay so minimal amps run through the switch. What I was thinking of doing is keeping that switch as the main “power” switch, but then putting two or three separate OTRATTW switches to control Front and Rear and possibly Side independently. The switches are rates at 20 amps so more than necessary for the max maybe 5 amps front and 4 amps rear and 1 amp side. Is this safe? I’m hoping given I have a relay already I don’t have to wire up one relay for each switch.

So just to be clear, OTRATTW Switch “A” would intercept the power coming from the relay to the Front Lights, Switch “B” the Rear Lights and say Switch “C” if I hook up some side lights that I have sitting on the shelf.

Yes, your OTRATTW/Carling switches, just as you said, are indeed 20 amp direct rated.

You will need to check your distance in wiring and will most likely need a larger gauge wire to handle the current. The longer the wire, the larger you should go. But measure and check.

(When I do my KustomFX switch panels and wiring, I use 20 gauge wiring.... BUT recommended to have those switches on a relay. It's safer, and plus allows the power In to also be a "trigger wire" too).

But again to answer your question.... your switches will be fine, but must likely need to increase wire gauge size. And don't forget to have an inline fuse on your "power in" wire.

Thank you!!! Been selling quite a few (including the 3 switch cubby) to a lot of members on here.

I don't want to hijack the OP's thread and want to help him with his question, so here's a direct sales thread of the switch panels to check out:

I sell quite a few of the OTRATTW switches....and there are some really good switches out there too....but they are one of the best!

Thanks. I used at least 16 gauge and up to 12 gauge already, so I think I'll be ok on wiring. I already have a fuse at the battery for the main power to the relay. Maybe I'll add another fuse block after the relay and before the switch.

From the sounds of it, I think you will be just fine!
Please post pics when you get it all done!
