Leer and ARE Caps on '09-'13 F-150's

Just purchased a 2012 F150 Crew Cab 4x4 EcoBoost 5 1/2' bed. The color is White Platinum Metallic Tri-coat.

Probably going to but an Leer 100XL or an ARE CX bed cap. Anyone had issues or luck with either? Opinions? Thoughts?

Please send pictures.

Thanks

I have the LEER XL on my 05 screw and its awesome. IMO compared to the ARE's the LEER has it in the looks and options department. ID post pics but because of the goofy rail on the top of the tailgate on the 09+ trucks the toppers are shaped funny for them.

LEER 100XL from the LEER website.

I had a Leer 100XL from way back (think circa '94) on my Ranger and it was still on there when I sold it in 2002. The clear coat had started to peel on the roof but the cap was structurally sound. The curved glass looks great and the side window "vents" are a nice touch. I also opted for the SUV-style roof rack but never carried anything on it.

The downside was I could never carry my motorcycle back there so I haven't had a cap since then. I've been using a tonneau cover since.

I like the caps I just don't like the price. I don't think they are worth it.

My friends both have 2010's and both have Leer caps. So far, no leaks, tight seals, great product.

I was looking at a supercab with Leer cap to secure all my crap, but after pricing it out it was a helluva lot cheaper to just get a supercrew for more locked storage and no cap.

Has anyone had issues with the rear window seal to tail gate fit?

Saw a 2011 f150 with a Leer 100XQ leaking around where the tailgate step and rear window meet. There just a rubber "windshield wiper" like piece that slides half way across the top of the tailgate. That in turn lets part of the top of the tailgate exposed to rain and snow thus leaking. All because the rear glass doesn't have the same curve as the tailgate.

Does the Leer 100XR have a different seal?

Most will leak at the sides of the tail gate which is the trucks fault and not the shells. I have an ARE Z series.

My 100XL follows the contour of my tailgate pretty well, have not noticed any leaking in that area, or any other area for that matter.

I've owned 1 Leer and 2 ARE caps. I had nothing but problems with the Leer rear glass mechanism. My 2 ARE have been flawless. I'll be getting another one for my 2013 Platinum that's on order. The Ford key fob will also work on the Z series lock, a very nice feature.
