Default Key/Remote start dilema

I've got 2 problems...

1. my remote start/key fob combo key got crushed. The key will still start the truck, but the case is smashed, won't go back together, remote won't work at all.
Dealer says $180 to replace key, $55 to reprogram.

2. my remote start SUCKS. 2013 XLT with factory basic remote start (non bi-directional) I can stand at my door 20' from the truck an it will LOCK, but not START... cold weather is coming, I don't like it not working, the wife HATEs it not working.
Dealer says to bring it in (again) to see if anything is wrong with it.

So, I can solve problem #1 with a new key, and I should be able to reprogram it since I have 2 working original keys. Working as in even the crushed key will start the truck.

But I'd still have a crap remote start system.
Dealer service dept wasn't sure if I could upgrade the remote start I have to the newer bi-directional system, since mine was factory installed/integral to the truck (I don't have a clue if that even makes sense)

Anyone have any ideas on whether I can/can not upgrade from a factory installed system to a newer/better?
I will also be calling around to see if any local places can/will install something better.

Seems I have it figured out.

grab new key/fob from http://www.keylessentryremotefob.com...how=120&page=1

program it myself.

if dealer can't/won't fix the crap 100series remote start system... I can & will buy & install the bi-directional plug n play system.

NOT overly happy about possibly having to buy another system having already paid for one... but I'm tired of the one I have NOT working.

A TIP:

Hold the key under your chin while triggering the remote start function. Your head acts as an antenna & will gain you about 20'-30'

I tried this yesterday and I was no more than 25' from my truck- outside looking at it and it didn't help. if I am more than 10' from my truck mine will not work.

13 fx4 crew- loaded.

Buy the key online. You can have them cut anywhere for cheap. I got mine cut at the dealer for free.

Programming the key is easy and free. I believe instructions are in the owners manual.

See if dealer can fix your remote start if its under warranty.

you are bang on. Go to a locksmith r the key cutting if you are nervous about someone screwing it up. They know what they are doing more than some min wage dude at Home Depot.

Programming is easy and takes 2 mins. Open door, turn key on/off 8 times rapidly, ending in the on position. Press a button on each fob, horn will honk for each. Then turn off. Done.

If this is true then there is an issue with something. (More than the problems people have with the 100 series.) Other than an occasional not starting, mine has been fine.

May I suggest trying the the other key to see if it is any better, or replacing the battery. Sometimes it is the simple fix that works.

I don't know what to say about how poorly the 100series works for us.
The wife and I have both stood at the front door, with our seperate key's(< 30' away) and tried to start the truck... 9/10 times it WILL NOT start, locks no problem, but won't start.
Even standing beside the truck, again doors lock, but it normally won't start.

So I'm looking to buy a new key (and a few spares) online, thanks for the heads up as opposed to paying the dealer $$$. Also thanks for the programming tips, another big $$ item the dealer would charge for.

I have read too many "100series suck" threads so I am researching the OEM bi-directional unit and how easy it IS/ISN'T to install on my own. As I understand it is simply unplug the 100 unit, and install the new one in it's place... if so I'll grab it in the new year. Until then I will let the dealer try to remedy this problem.

While I am extremely dis-satisfied with the 100series unit, I will give them the opportunity to fix it, but even fixing the range/actually working problem, we are still stuck not knowing if it started or not... so I'll see if the dealer will cut me a deal to order the 200series, 2way unit.

Still taking any & all ideas/advice/thoughts, so fire away.

Try putting it in your mouth and yodel...your voice acts as an antenna....not to loud though you might start other vehicles in the neighborhood.
