Default Issue Remains After Timing Chain Replacement

Hi All,

I'm looking for some direction on where to look / what to do next. I have a 2013 F150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. It's at 90k miles and I just replaced the phasers and timing chain. The replacement went smoothly and I didn't have any issues with following the online guides and videos on the procedure. I was able to lock the cams, and then align the phasers and crank timing dots with the correct links on the chain. After following the startup procedure, the truck fired up fine and runs smoothly. However, after driving for between 5-10 minutes the p0016 code returns.

For some background on the replacement:

- The original timing chain was defiantly worn. The original tensioner was fully extended and there was enough slack in the chain to almost get a finger under it (but not pull it off any teeth/gears) .
- I used the ford tensioner kit listed in TSB 17-0026, BL3Z-6D256-C (rather than a -B) and the parts guy let me know it was the most recent version.
- After startup procedure and checking oil/coolant levels - truck was let to idle until warm with all accessories off to re-learn. Truck was then driven around 20-30 minutes for testing. After clearing the codes, it takes about 5 minutes for PCM to throw the p0016 code and then another 2-5 minutes for the MIL to come on confirming it.

I do an ODBII with ForscanLite setup to it and was watching the VCT_EXH and VCT_INT actual degrees. They varied individual up and down a little bit but stayed pretty close to the below values:

VCT_INT_ACT1 - 13.56 degrees
VCT_INT_ACT2 - 11.02 degrees
VCT_EXH_ACT1 - 12.30 degrees
VCT_EXH_ACT2 - 11.28 degrees

However, I'm not sure what the default values are supposed to be or if these are off at all. Looking for some direction on what to do/check next. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Devin

Could you update what you found the problem to be? I'm researching this repair myself now.

VCT_INT_ACT1 should read close to 0 degrees, in TSB 17-0026 Ford states that a reading of over 6 degrees on this PID indicates excessive primary timing chain wear and requires replacement of the primary chain and tensioner. If I had to guess I'd say your chain is off a tooth as all your cam readings are +11-13 degrees.

I meant to this a few weeks ago. The salesman at Lasco Auto Parts was kind enough to open the kit and tell me what was included before I ordered it. A+ service.

I don't see the bolts for the HPFP. Those are TTY and should also be replaced. You don't want that sucker leaking on you.

The photo is just to show what came in the kit. I ordered the fuel pump bolts, secondary chains, all 3 tensioners, all 4 guides, crank sprocket and sealant separately.

No. I didn't see any reason to.
