OK so here's what I came up with. Still needs some tweeking but I'm getting close to a good solution...

Step 1:
Fabricate aluminum mounting bracket - outer hole spacing 6.5", inner hole spacing 2".


Step 2:
Install RAM mount on bracket


Step3:
Mount unit into pre-existing holes in top of head unit trim - replace existing screws with longer 1-1/4" srews





Cut L-shaped aluminum piece and mount onto plexiglass


Attach mount to plexiglass


Finished product:

Also, the iPad does NOT have true GPS. It has assisted GPS, which uses data to overlay maps with your location data, without the need to have maps stored on the device. The iPad will use it's 3G receiver to use your location, with or without a plan. This is the case because of the on-device activation. I am integrating an iPad into the dash of my F-150, with Bluetooth and a charging solution, it should work well. I am just working out the details to get video from a reverse camera into the iPad live.
