I want to do the USB2 mod. what do i need to do this?
I wanted to hook mine up to my ipod, so I got a standard 3' Mini-USB to Standard USB cable for $3.00 at my local electronics store, and a USB gender changer for $1.00. I ran that to my glovebox and just plug my USB iPod cable that came with my ipod up in there, ziptied all the excess cable to make it neat and leave it in my glove box, and it works like a champ. Cost me $4.00 + tax.
As for switching the main and secondary ports so you don't have to say "USB2" all the time, I guess I don't understand that. Once I set it for USB 2 the first time, it goes there as I scroll through my list of Media options. I've only had to say "USB2" the very first time. Well, actually I had to do it twice because I did a master reset of Sync after the dealer installed my Trailer Brake Controller because my phone wouldn't auto connect anymore.

^ What he said. If you want to make your new USB plug the primary port, you'll also need a dremel w/ cutoff wheel or some sort of exacto knife to remove a bit of plastic from the clip on the cable that goes from the Sync box to the stock port in the center stack. Then you can plug the stock cable in the secondary port, and your new cable into the primary. That prevents you from having to say "USB2" all the time.
I never understand why it is so mush harder for people to say "USB2" over "USB"?!?!?!? Yeah thats a real nuisance. Just stick with the extra port and say USB2 its not that big of deal.
One thing to note, I made an oops while doing mine. Where you drill the hole for the port is really important. Where I initially drilled, there wasn't enough space behind the console wall in the shifter area for the USB plug to fit. I had to re-drill lower and off to the side. I've got a bit of bondo work to do now. If I had thought more about it I would have probably kept the initial hole and gotten an angled USB cable, but I wanted it done that day.

So you can see where to NOT drill a hole... Just try and make the hole near the power plug.

Not wanting to be one of those folks, but there is a very good thread in here some where with pictures on how to do the mod. Can't remember which section, but I read it yesterday.
I guess it depends on how much you use the voice recognition. 2 minutes of extra work or "USB2" for the rest of the time I own the truck. Choice is yours. You picked A, I picked B and we're both right.
You can do it for cheaper than Ebay and have it in only a few days instead of a few weeks too if you know where to look.
If you note, these two pieces cost less than $4 bucks shipped to your door. I just did this earlier this week and they work perfect and the 5pin Mini USB end does not require any trimming or adjusting to make it fit like some other cables do.

Something else not to do. This is a link to a mini male to USB female adapter. It was cheap and shipped free so I bought it figuring to trim the edges to fit. Unfortunately, the wires from one side to the other float all through the soft rubber. I've trimmed things like this down before with no issues but this one got me good. Ended up making my own cable from the ton laying around my house and shop. Finished it tonight going to by glovebox. I had originally intended to go to the center console but turned out my extension was non-compliant.
As for the USB2 vs USB, I'm leaving this one as usb2 so I have ready access to my iPhone in the main port, just my preference.

i'm not asking how to do it, i'm asking for what parts i need to complete it. i'm not a computer guy like some. so getting the right usb cable would be great
