No way this is true. I have a 2011 Fx4 Screw and maybe get 13-15 average. Towing a small pop up camper I get 10.

The EPA estimated highway mpgs are tested at 60mph just fyi for everyone. So when someone says how come I don't get 21 MPG on the highway goin 75...well thats why.

It's actually a little more complicated than just running at 60 mph and measuring the fuel used. The EPA runs the vehicles through test schedules that account for things like high speeds, rates of acceleration, braking, use (or lack of use) of the AC, and air temperature, among other things. Based on these tests, they come up with their new "highway" estimates. There's more info available about the tests on the EPA/DOE fuel economy web site. In any case, like I said in my original post, I can't get 21 MPG regardless of my speed, unless I am going downhill. Anyway, my issue is with the stupid gauge that constantly reminds me of my own inaccurate expectations, not the actual mileage. My fault for believing the hype.

I still really like the truck and would buy another!

I actually enjoy periodically looking at the "instant" mpg gauge. I've got a '11, 5.0L, SCrew with 3.73 gears & 20" rims and my current mpg is 17.3

Like others have said it has helped me realize just exactly how dramatically my driving habits affect the mpg. But my wife has already made comments like...

"who cares how many miles per gallon you got!"

"drive the darn thing & just hush!"

"focus on the road, quit with the dang gauges!"

& the comment that shut me up...

"if you're so worried about the fuel mileage we'll just take it back then!"

But I am very happy & satisfied with my mpg's. I love my truck!

If you cant get 21 mpg at any speed then there is definitely something wrong with your truck. i can set mine to cruise at 50 mph and on a flat stretch of road im easily getting my best estimate of 25-27 according to the "instant" gauge.

Turn it off? I used to watch it all the time. But I now find it kind of annoying. They are trucks, the mileage will never be car like. I average in the mid to high 17's most of the time. The best I have gotten was 20.1 on the highway. I am happy with that.

I like it plus its easy to turn off! GIven the trucks immense power it helps you find the sweet spot for throttle application, particularly at highway speeds. You can get decent acceleration keeping the revs below 2K and save a lot of gas in the process

There are no flat stretches of road where I live. None longer than a mile or so. Lots of hills though, and there's nothing wrong with the truck. But I appreciate your ideas.

Once again, I'm not complaining about the mileage - my issue is with the stupid gauge and my own unrealistic expectations.

(I know I can "Pause" the trip gauges, but it's ridiculous to do that every time I'm stopped).
That's funny, I have the same problem. I have an EDGE tuner that gives me an average, but it always goes down (fast) when I leave my truck on for not even five minutes? Which is stupid, because you actually save gas by leaving your truck running versus turning it off and back on, within that small time frame.

Really? Leaving an engine running rather then "turning it off and back on, within a small time frame" saves gas?

How does that work?

Seriously, I'm curious about this.

Edit: I found this article:

Myth 2: Each time you start your car you waste more gasoline than if you let it idle.
Wrong. Automotive engines do not operate efficiently when they idle. Experts say there is a maximum 10 second break-even rule. If you are idling longer than 10 seconds, both you and the engine are better off if
the engine is turned off and restarted.
