Default How to avoid “THE TICK” 14’ 5.4 with 35k

I bought my wife a 14’ Expedition Limeted because that’s what she wanted, I am/ was a GM guy but I really like this 5.4, because I didn’t know anything about the 5.4, so I came here to read AFTER I bought it..... (got it backwards) and after the PAGES of “tick” threads on here, I began to panic....😬 I bought the extended warranty that covers me to 130k.... I want to avoid the tick....

i had an 02 Tahoe with the 5.3 that had 180k of trouble free miles. I was hoping that I could do the same out of this Expedition.

So so do I use only premium synthetic oil and change at 5k intervals? Change plugs at 50k before they get stuck?

Change the oil regularly, every 5000 miles. run Motorcraft filters only. Switch to full synthetic oil. From what I can gather, that's one of the bigger factors in the tick.

I think the reason not a lot of replies is this has been covered many times. The later 5.4s were much more reliable after 2008. But yes big thing is run motorcraft semi syn, 5w20 or 30, run a motorcraft filter or good brand with anti drainback valve and change every 3000 miles. And there's a major difference between ticking and the cam phaser problem. The phaser sounds a lot worse than just ticking. Also the 5.4 ticks all the time, has loud injectors. If you get loud chain slap at start up or your truck sounds like a diesel at idle then Time to worry.

Sell it before it hits 125k. That should avoid the tick.

Also 2 independent mechanics told me when I had a 5.4 to change the oil every 3k.

You will get a lot of opinions on that.

But if if it were mine again I would sell just before 100 k

FWIW, I bought a '12 Expedition MAX Limited with 175,000 km (~108k miles) on it and 10,000km in 5 months with 0 issues. The injectors tick pretty loudly, I'm going to run some Techron through it in the next tank to see if that will help. The gas mileage is worse than I'd like (13-14mpg) and worse than what I've gotten on the 5.4L in the F-150 I had before but the Expedition is much heavier so I guess it's reasonable.

I'm going to change the plugs, air filter, and oil this week. It's running whatever synthetic blend my shop put in it last time, and a Motocraft filter. I'm going to switch to Mobil 1 this week. Hoping that plus the fuel system cleaner will improve the mileage a bit. When I first bought it it was getting 12mpg highway and I changed the oil and the oxygen sensors and it hopped right up to about 16mpg and it's been slowly decreasing since, but we also do quite a bit more city driving than before.

Don't worry too much, my wife loves our truck so much. Hope your wife does too!

I run Mobil1 synthetic and either use Motorcraft or Mobil1 premium filters in my 2012 E150 with the 5.4. 90K miles, and runs like a top. The transmission just took a **** on me but the dealer replaced it, I guess there was a known issue in certain 11-12 models and they extended the warranty on the transmission to 6 years (from in service date) and 160,000 miles. Kudos to Ford for that!

Is that the 6-speed automatic? I haven't heard about any extended warranty on that… I'm about to hit 6 years in service, though, so it's not like it matters much. Haven't had a problem either.
