Default Hip Checked a Deer - Some Questions

Been on the east coast 3 years and finally hit a deer. It was a little guy and I was on the brakes, so not much damage.

2 Questions:
- Are there bolts and adjustments that I can try to get the bumper back in alignment? The passenger side corner is down probably a half inch.

- I can buy a whole new grille for $350-400. Do I need to? Can I buy just the chrome surround part?

Or can I buy this thing and pull off the part I need?

Insurance is $500 deductible, so I am hoping I can fix it for less. Luckily none of the painted plastic parts are busted.

are you sure your comprehensive is $500? not the the same as a wreck that is your fault. you can straightened the bumper, might be just the brackets and you can buy just the surround. the cross pieces come off but be careful or you will break the tabs off. i would get estimates from a couple of bodyshops, tell them you are not using your insurance, just out of pocket. my son has hit 3 deer in the last 2 years and both of us are looking into a aftermarket bumper with a grill guard. good luck

I helped my buddy get his bumper back in alignment (looked similar to yours) by setting up a jack under the rearmost bottom corner of the bumper and putting a small piece of 2x4 between the jack and the bumper. Slowly jacked it up and bent it back in place. It isn't perfect but it saved him a new bumper.

I can't see, what's wrong with the grille?

It's cracked on the lower left of the picture.

Did you at least throw him in the bed and take him home? Put some meat in the freezer.

I see it now. Personally I'd straighten and fill the crack then PTM the surround.

Deductible is $500 for deer. And it was the size of a dog, so no deer meat. The next morning there was a spike out there that must have torn up someones car. We have a chart at work for Deer Kills - Car, Bow, Shotgun. I'm on the board!

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to look at the mounting bracket and see what I can do. Also see how much a local body shop wants to straighten it out.

I am leaning towards that Ebay grille. Its silly that instead of Ford it says OOOO.

I hit a deer this past spring and as you can see below the damage is very similar. I thought the same thing that you could loosen the brackets and realign and be done. I was wrong. The brackets do not adjust and were bent. My grill was not hurt. I lost the license plate bracket and one bumper pad. Bottom line to repair it correctly it went to the collision shop and got new bumper brackets and trim parts. Do the repair correctly that is why you have insurance. By the way in my case a deer/car collision is not a chargeable accident by my insurance company. In addition my son just went through the same thing in No. Virginia which is where this damage was done.

I hit a deer at about 60 and it bent my bumper up instead of down. Used a come-along and pulled it down some but I was in a hurry and didn't have time to complete my "repair". At least my tire doesn't rub anymore when turning... Then my brother slid into my pickup on a quad and bent my other side up, although not as bad. I just can't get a break with damage to my front end

Man this forum gets a lot of action! This thread gets bumped to the 4th or 5th page everyday.

I want to do this cheaply at this stage (Or do nothing at all). USAA said I can make a claim within 2 years also.

Uh... what is PTM?
