HELP! Replaced Power Running Board - Now going backwards
#11
The two power wires would be easy to swap on the motor harness clip. They are the larger wires, I used Oem boards with an amp harness not that long ago and only used the two wires out of 5 I believe.

Well, I rotated the motor cover 1 set of bolt holes, and BOOM, the motor turns the right way!
BUT....It's binding pretty bad, even with the new motor. I'm afraid I'm going to have to press out all the hinge pins and replace all those bushings too. The passenger side works fine with just the motor replacement, but the driver side gets more wear I guess, and it's just been stuck in the down position for about a month anyway. I had to go to Harbor Freight yesterday and buy a hydraulic press. Hopefully I get my $130 worth out of it and it will last long enough to press all the pins out and then press them back in again.

About rotating the cover...
The magnets inside the cover align respective to the segments in the windings and the brushes. So while you can rotate the cover 120 or 240 degrees, and maybe make the motor turn the other way, the magnets and the segment windings will be mis-aligned, and the motor will not run properly.
The cover goes on one specific way - with the center of the magnets aligned to the brushes - and with 3 holes there is only one spot where that happens.

Running Boards (2008 Ford Explorer Limited) Running Backwards
OK, wow. I was wondering if it was a wiring issue, but since its just a slip in wiring harness, I just assumed it would come from the factory the right way.
Both of these responses are helpful. I'll try rotating the motor housing first and if that doesn't work I'll try to switch the wires in the harness.

Yes; this worked out perfect! We did take the motor cover off of the motor. 2008 Ford Explorer only has 2 bolts--took them off and turned the cover. BINGO! They work correctly now. Thank you so much!
