Quick history:

I've owned this 2009 4x4 since new. And since new, it has made a vibration noise like a heat or dust shield was loose on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Now I can lessen this noise if I let up on the gas ever so slightly at the time of shift or just wait for 3rd to punch it. I have asked a couple dealers to look at it but of course they ignored the request and now I'm out of warranty.

I have always thought it was the dust shield on the trans that protects the torque converter. Well this weekend I finally just took it off and test drove only to find it still made the noise. While I was under the truck, I looked and I can't seem to find a single shield that would make the same noise while being based on gear changes and not rpm exactly.

Since there are so many of these trucks on the roads, has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did it end up being?

Please note: it is not pinging from a bad tune. I do know the difference. This sounds like a a catalytic converter heat shield on an old rusting Chevy.

I had a rattle and it ended up being the heat shield for the spare tire on the exhaust. Mine only made the noise when I started it or revved it in park or neutral. Worth checkin out though, all ya gotta do is bend it a little!

Thank you and that is an idea. Since I can't tell where it is coming from on the truck I need to check it all out.

If anyone else has info to add please do.

I put dynamat on all the heat shields and now vibrations and even the sound from the road turtles when changing lanes is diminished. I was concerned that the dynamat would melt from heat from mufflers but no worries all good.

Interesting idea. I had thought about this too and had the same worry of it melting.

Did you have the noise too prior to the dynamat? And did you take the time to figure out which one it was?

nope. I just had it on lift and was tapping all the areas under the truck to determine their tinniness and remembered I had some dynamat extreme left over from doing a previous vehicle and the plan was hatched. There are some areas under the vehicle that ford has put big pieces on essentially black duct tape to cover certain holes?? I have no idea what the reason behind this is as it is already coming off on some of these areas.

Any input on that would be appreciated as I would be more than happy to cover them with dynamat which will not come off but if they are drains...
