Default Gear selection indicator

OK here is a stupid question..... Most of the time I have my dash indicator set on "Fuel Economy" where you can watch the green bar move up and down with fuel use. Occasionally to the right of that indicator is a vertical row of numbers indicating which gear you are in. Note this IS NOT when in manual mode, but in automatic mode. The number 6 is at the top. Right under it is the 5, then the 4 and so on. The numbers are in the color of bronze but the gear you are in will be in bold.. Now the odd part of this is that those numbers don't always light up. Is there some setting that causes them to be visible or invisible? Sometimes, you can see them. At other times you can't, and I don't know why.

And BTW, my truck is a 2011 Screw 4x4 with the 5.0.

If you push the + on the shifter, they will appear and you can watch your truck shift through the gears. If you push + again, they disappear. If you push - (minus) while the gears are visible in the screen, you will lock out 6th gear ( it will disappear) push - again and 5th gear will go invisible and be locked out. And so on, and so on, with the other gears.

Owners manuals can be found here. I heard they are a great read that even made 2011 best sellers list, and you will never guess what happens at the end!

If your truck build date is after 5/1/11 then u the old engine software. Go to the dealer and say you have rough shifts. They will install the latest software and the indicators stay on every time you put it in "D". Plus after te update my truck averages 19.7 mpg. Before was 18.5.

My truck is a September build and the gear indicators stay on whenever I have it in and out of drive. My dad's Limited was a November 2010 build and it doesn't. Figured it was some old software. Sucks to be him
