Gas is as cheap or cheaper now than at most points in the last 50 or so years. First you must adjust (historically) the dollar for inflation (and the falling strength of the dollar), then adjust for per capita increase in income. For example, in the early 80's (around 1981 I think because Reagan was taking office), when gas was $1.30 or so, which was more expensive for that time than $3.30 or so is today. There was a time in the late '90's that gas was way cheap (even cheaper than 1981), and people must now think that that was normal. Well, no, it was way cheaper than normal.

Of course, I would prefer $1/gal gas, but it is out of my control... and I will be keeping my truck, and be content about the price of gas (for now).
Um you did notice that regardless of inflation the average family income hasnt gone anywhere. Prices go up income stays in the crapper! So your point is mute!

No, it is PERFECTLY fine to bitch about high gas prices....just don't bitch about fuel MILEAGE. It totally pisses me off to see prices fluctuate .15 to .35 just because some camel jockey farts crosswise and someone else smells it. Speculators in the market drive a lot of the b.s. increases, but the single biggest problem is lack of refineries. We are down to THREE....yes, three....in the U.S., and thus the oil companies laughingly have us by the ***** and squeeze them to hear us squeal every now and then. How many times have you heard, "...the threat of a hurricane to the Gulf Coast region (most of which never materialize as a real problem) caused gas prices to jump 10 cents overnight...."?
There is so much oil on the world market that gas SHOULD be about $.90, hell it is 11 cents a gallon in Venezuela....but lack of refineries and falsely inflated market prices as well as a host of other b.s. reasons keeps the price high. But we still have it made compared to our European brothers....they take it up the **** with gravel in the Vaseline!
Nah, I'll never bitch about mileage, hell I've got a high-performance sports car that get less than 12 mpg and a boat that gets 2 mpg...lol! But I'll dammed sure bitch about fuel prices, thank you!

I don't want to say your wrong, but I did a search and quite a few links say there are 150 refineries in the US?
