Default FX4 questions

Good afternoon,

I am looking at some 2011-2014 fX4’s. It seems like there was a vehicle refresh in 2013? Is this correct, I’ve looked online for info on that update but couldn’t find anything.

noticed the radios are a lot nicer on the 13/14, can those easily be retrofit into a 2011? lastly, do these all come with a back up camera?

Thanks!

The 09-14 F-150s had refreshes in 2011 & 2013 (so every 2 years)

The 2013 refresh was mostly cosmetic, and most notable changes we're the front grilles, Optional HID headlights, and the Infotainment/HVAC controls. The 13/14 radios with the 7 inch screen use SYNC 2 with My Ford Touch which is a decent system, and a vast improvement over the touchscreen radios in the 09-12 trucks (SYNC 1). The 13/14 with SYNC 2 are also easily upgraded to SYNC 3 which is Ford's current Infotainment platform with Android Auto & Carplay. However, the SYNC 1 with touchscreen in 09-12 is near impossible to upgrade.

Any of the trucks with the infotainment screen should have the backup camera, but I don't know that for certain.

The big change was in '11 with the new powertrains; AFAIK, there were no major changes in '13. The '13-'14 trucks are slightly more desirable than the previous years, but that's just because they had worked out the bugs from previous years.

Since you're looking at FX4's, I'll say that the HID headlights are well worth the upgrade alone over a 11/12.

To find out the differences between the model years, download the brochures for each year and look for the options charts. That'll show you what's different.

I'd say you have this backwards. The Sync1 systems can fairly easily be upgraded to aftermarket systems, which gives wide choice and price points. The Sync2 cannot because it is even more integrated into the other computer systems in the truck. We have finally found a way to at least add decent amps and speakers with Forscan, but it's Sync3 or nothing else for upgrading control to a MFT Sync2 truck.

That said, the engines are definitely a reason to go with a 13/14. Both 5.0 and EB have fewer problems the later you get them. I wish I could get a 2018 engine in a 2014 truck.
