I'd paint the appliqué like this guy did on his truck. 'twas a blacked out platty with 08 HD wheels. Looked like awesomeness.

Sorry for my ignorance, what's the difference between the FX4 and Platinum tailgates?

Thanks, I'm sure it is nice, but I'm ok without it.

I read a very lengthy thread on here that the auto windshield wipers suck.

Other than that, virtually the same.
I have a Platinum and I have a locking 3.55 rear diff and...
Chrome trim, power running boards, brushed aluminum trim, power telescoping steering wheel, rain sensing wipers, sound screen windshield and 4A (Automatic 4WD).

Personally, it comes down to what you want. The Platinum offers more features and I liked the Platinum more vs the FX4 I looked at.

Different strokes for different folks. The FX4 I looked at wasn't that much cheaper, so I went with the Platinum.

I just bought an fx4 with luxury package, nav and appearance package and the truck is amazing. It rides super nice and smooth, the interior looks like a million bucks, it's powerful and quiet at the same time (I got the 5.0 v8).

By reading what you are going to be using the truck for I don't see you needing anything more then the fx4.

Just my opinion.

I've been reading this a LOT lately and it's completely false with current tires. Back when 20" first came out in the late '90's, tire manufacturers didn't know how to construct a tire with a thin sidewall that can flex but still protect the wheel so they made it stiff. This is no longer the case. Most 20" tires are just as compliant as 18" tires. It comes down to the specific tire you want. I went from 20" stock Pirelli's to 18" BFG and the ride is more harsh because the BFG is a LT tire and it also weighs more.

Cost and selection is not really an issue either and it's less of an issue as time goes by.

Personally, I think any F150 would be fine for the OP's needs. If you want more luxury, go with the Platinum. If you want a more rugged look, go with the FX4. Either way, you'll love the new truck and it won't let you down.
