Yesterday the fuel gauge went to below Empty and the DTE alarm chimed and displayed "_ _ _ Empty". I put in a couple of gallons of gas from our gas can at work. After work I drove to a station to fill up. When I left work the DTE still said "Empty" - then went to 4 miles - then 23 miles - then 40 miles. When I got to the station I could only add 11 gallons then it was full. I cranked it up and headed home. The gauge went to FULL, the distance to empty went to 404 miles remaining. After about 8 miles the gauge went to Empty. It took about 3 or 4 seconds to go from Full to completely Empty. The DTE Chime sounded and the display again said "_ _ _ Empty". I have gone about 35 miles since and there is no change. What is going on with the gas gauge and DTE display?

 

My 2011 XLT 5.0 was doing similar things. After two different dealership changed out the fuel pump assembly and didn't fix the problem, another tech said that it was the instrument cluster. That was changed and no more weird readings in the last 4 years.
