Default Ford Service Info for: click, snap, pop, tick when shifting to Reverse

My truck has been making a loud series of pops or clicks when shifting into reverse. Once in a while when down shifting at light throttle it will do the same.

Here is a copy from the info Ford provided my dealer:

SPECIAL SERVICE MESSAGES
22384
2011-2012 F150 with 9.75" rear axle built from 1/1/2011 - drive line click, snap, pop, tick.
CUSTOMER MAY EXPERIENCE A CLICKING, POPPING, SNAPPING, TICKING OR CREAK NOISE IN THE DRIVELINE WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO REVERSE OR DRIVE, OR CHANGING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE OR VICE VERSA WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY AND BRAKES ARE ENGAGED. IT MAY RESULT IN 1-3 SEQUENTIAL CLICKS AND NOT REPEAT WITHOUT CHANGING DIRECTIONS. THE SOUND APPEARS TO COME FROM THE REAR DRIVESHAFT AND IS MORE PRONOUNCED ON VEHICLES WITH AN ALUMINUM DRIVESHAFT. IT MAY NOT BE EVIDENT INSIDE THE VEHICLE IF THE DRIVESHAFT IS NOT ALUMINUM. ENGINEERING IS WORKING ON A RESOLUTION TO THIS CONCERN AND NO REPAIR SHOULD BE ATTEMPTED AT THIS TIME. ADVISE CUSTOMERS THIS ISSUE ONLY RESULTS IN AN ANNOYING NOISE AND VEHICLE PERFORMANCE IS NOT AFFECTED. MONITOR OASIS FOR UPDATES.
EFFECTIVE DATE: 01- JUNE-2012

Anyone else have any info on this or more experience with the issue?
Thanks.

well my truck does this but i thought it was the slip yoke again like on my 2007 and 2003. Maybe something new. Can't wait to see what the fix is...

Wink fixed my own

I have a post on this same problem. I took mine into my dealer and they even took a driveshaft [aluminum] out of a new truck and put it in mine, same problem. They gave me a new F150 as a loaner,no noise. They had my truck for a few days, called me to pick it up,said they were waiting on Ford to come up with a fix but it was deemed safe to drive.
They showed me the same bulletin as you show in your post!
Well, I tightened the rear lug nuts to 150 lbs and the clunk, pop noise stopped. Seems strange the Tech didn't check the lug nuts. I didn't tell the service manager about this until my next oil change. He said they would stay in touch with me and contact me when Ford had a fix [and he does call every week to tell me he hasn't forgot about my problem].
Here is what I think caused my clunk, pop noise---I traded my Hankook tires in on Michelns at 300mi. I get a free rotate and balance every 5000 mi [ tire shop, not Ford] and the noise started a day or two after my first rotate and balance. I used a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts,no more noise. Recently had 10000 mi rotate and balance done, watched the tire tech torque to 150 lbs, no pop or clunk.
Tighten your lug nuts to 150 lbs, might stop your pop, clunk.

you know, this seems as a plausable theory.

with my truck, i got the truck new with almost 400km on it, then around the 3500km mark, i noticed the tick. it happens as the op described. i have had my tires torqued once, yes i know what you're thinking lol, and now even with 50000km on the truck now, it still happens. with warranty up in the next oil change, im getting pretty nervous about it.

Pappamike,
I followed your thread a while back and thought I would add to the info available. It would be nice if they found a solution soon.

Also, what is the torque spec for our wheels - is it really 150!?
Thanks.

Just to follow up, I torqued the lug nuts to spec and it did not help.
Getting more frequent over the last couple weeks.

Also going to be watching this issue. I've only recently noticed it, as I can only hear it when the windows are rolled down. Doesn't matter if I go from P to D or P to R, flat ground or small incline/decline. Seems to happen no matter what the scenario is.

At least the current SSM puts my mind at ease with them saying it's simply a noise inconvenience, no mechanical worry..........
