Default Factory Order Deposits

Preparing to order a 2012 and my dealer informed me that there is a $500 deposit that is "non-refundable unless the truck comes in and was not what you ordered." I've seen people say they've cancelled their orders quite often on this forum so I'm a little suspect about this. Has anyone actually seen the fine print that goes along with these deposits (is there any?) and are they really non-refundable?

It is my understanding that this is a dealer thing, not a Ford thing. My dealer took a $500 deposit, but he said he'd return it if I had to cancel. He wanted my business and knew I was serious about buying and wouldn't cancel unless I really had to.

I special ordered every truck I ever owned with a $500 no obligation/no commitment deposit each time.

On one occasion I didn't like the truck that came in and they ordered me another.

That's the general policy in SoCal. Small town dealers might have different policies.

My salesman asked for a $500 deposit when I placed my order, so I wrote a check made out to the dealership. The salesman stapled the check to my order jacket. But the check was never cashed. When I took delivery, the salesman handed me my check.

Yes, I suspect this "requirement" varies from dealer to dealer.

How do you manage to order a truck that you didn't like after it came in? What was it about the truck you didn't like?

Most dealers in my area (Omaha, NE) want $1000 down for an order. It is refundable if I decide to cancel.

Getting ready to order one myself...

They didn't have one for me to test drive.

I ordered a 4x4 Reg Cab Flareside V8 (5.4L I think) with a stick. I was anti-automatic, a true manual die-hard. I wanted the shortest WB, most bastardized rocket possible.

When I test drove the new truck, the stick felt like it was gonna snap in half. I turned to my salesman, "I need an automatic." He said, "No problem."
