Yes it's weather proof - it's intended to be stuck on the driver's door below the door handle. Attaches with the typical 3M double sided automotive adhesive tape

The only issue I see with putting it in the gas filler is the gas fumes are corrosive. Now granted the keypad is waterproof. Is it fume proof? I see it working for maybe a year then you have to replace it because the contacts for the battery and the buttons will corrode horribly.

Sounds reasonable - however in my research I never saw evidence of that to be the case with people who did the same thing. Seems like people were getting 5-7 years out of the battery whether they put it on the exterior or in the fuel door. That's kind of subjective given location and cycles of use though. If there are fumes significant enough to eat a key fob after one year I would expect to see other indicators like paint damage.

Hey guys, I was Vladius71 previously and just having too many issues, I will repost the door handle keypad tutorial again when I get home on a generic file host. Would anyone be interested in hosting the file. My rack server went down and it will be a while for the parts to come in.

Bought this:

Then programmed it in the driveway and stuck it here:

No trip to the dealer and still looks clean. I just wanted peace of mind in case I accidentally lock the keys in the truck.

On a side note I also installed the OEM trailer brake controller and remote start system from Ford. Installed in minutes (plug n play) and had to go to the dealer to activate these systems in the IDS and get the key cut/programmed. Makes me glad I got the STX package and upgraded how I wanted to later. My last FX4 had too many bells and whistles but the STX doesn't have enough.
Update - 2 years 7 months, 35k miles later this keypad at this location still works fine and looks brand new.

No, it's not plug and play. You still need to program the module.
