Question F150 5.0 Towing-Need Help

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I Have a 2011 F150 XLT/XTR SuperCrew(long box) with 5.0 engine and 3.55 limited slip. This is my first Ford truck and I bought this truck in September of 2011 and my truck was made in May of 2011 and it doesn't have the leaking transmission problem.I have a Palomino Stampede S-21RGS and GVWR=5,402 lbs. (2,450 kg) so about 6000 lbs with cargo I tow alot in the summer.I just towed it this week of May long weekend and it a breeze to tow but i notice you need to get very HIGH RPM to drive it and when I'm on a pretty flat piece of highway it always on 4th gear and never goes to 5th or 6 until I go downhill even if I press the paddle down, it goes from 110 km to 90 km very quickly when trying to go up a small hill.

So my question is,"Is this normal for this engine and transmission?" and "Is there any other way to go uphill with out pushing down the paddle to the max?"

if you need more information to help me I will respond back.

Hey, Do you have your truck in the tow haul mode or not? I have the 5.4 and it tows fine all day through the mountains etc. couldn't tell you what gear it is in most of the time but its only ever 2800 to 3000 rpm at crusing speed of 110 km/hr

Yes, I do tow in tow haul mode but yours is the 5.4 so it can tow more at low rpm. Thanks for replying it means alot but I want someone with the 5.0 engine too you know.

Unfortunately, the 5.0s high torque is in the 4500-5000 rpm range. It really depends on how fast your driving.

Yes, that is normal.

A few tricks I use is to manual shift or lock out 6th gear.

I can keep mine in 5th gear pretty consistently at 60-65. I NEVER tow faster then that.

Bottom line the 5.0 tows awesome, just at a higher RPM.

I towed about 6k lbs ( Jeep plus trailer )average speed of 65 - 70 for 600 miles and average rpm in 5th gear @ 3000 . Overpasses with cruise on it would drop to 4th and hit 5k rpm , then on the down side of the overpass it would take a half mile or so to shift back up to 5th... No complaints about my 11.9 mpg's , was in tow haul with 6th locked out.... But I do live in the land of the flat down here...

Tranny temp was anywhere from 197 - 204 deg F

Normal use it hangs out around 180
