Ok so this will sound weird I think.. So on my truck (09 4.6 XLT SCREW) I have an engine tick. To me it sounds a lot like injector ticking.. that sound is fairly universal between auto makers. But a guy at work with a '13 F150 mentioned how his 5.4 had a ticking that was some plastic.. "thing" that either helped or controlled the , variable timing. One on each head (I think). Does this sound familiar? Do I have cause for concern?

 

He was talking about the chain tensioners.

I'm not familiar with the 4.6 so I can't help you there. Someone will be along shortly that can give you that answer.

 

On my 4.6 2V it was the EVAP purge valve towards the back of the motor. There's a TSB out for it and I believe its TSB 11-1-5. I had a ticking noise that was off and on and every once and a while it felt like it wanted to stall at idle in drive with the a/c on.

 

Hmm.. was it very.. VERY similar in sound to the injector pulse noise? That's what I hear and the only reason I bring it up was dude said his sounded A LOT like injectors. Anyway evap huh? Same issue on the 3V?

 

It did sound like injectors but louder. I could hear it inside the truck with the radio off. But changing the EVAP purge valve did fix it for me. I'm not sure about the 3V because I don't know much about those, but the 3V is also listed on the TSB. There's a video on youtube with a chevy cruze that had a purge valve ticking and it sounds similar to the way mine sounded.

 

interesting. Ok well if it was that loud then that's not what mines doing. Im just hearing the injector pulses.. whew!
